Around here the two go hand in hand. Because the truth is, a Gerber isn't a Gerber until it's got a few (or a few hundred) stories under its belt.
I would like to thank-you for making such a useful tool. I used my Gerber to save my brother's leg.
We were out camping/hunting this summer when a pretty good storm hit us. We were taking shelter in the tent when a tree fell through the tent and landed on his leg. He ended up being pinned down.
I used my rifle to try prying the tree off and I just ended up bending my barrel. My truck was a good two miles away, so it would have taken too long to run out to it.
The only other thing I had was my Gerber on my side, so I used it to start shredding bark off the tree and weaken the part over his leg. I then was able to use my bent rifle to pry enough off to where he could pull his leg out. I then went and grabbed my truck and rushed him to the hospital.
He ended up with a closed-fracture and a cold from being in the cold hospital soaken wet, but at least he kept his leg, and we owe it to our useful Gerber tool.
